Practical Aspects of Vertical Gardening in Urban Agriculture

Vertical gardening has gained a significant attention in the recent past due to ever increasing population in cities and rapid urbanization. As the horizontal space for gardening in cities is a limiting factor, it is always good to seek the possibilities of using the vertical space for gardening. Vertical gardening can be as simple as hanging pots to commercial vertical farms. In this workshop, the practical vertical gardening possibilities will be discussed.

Control and Optimization of Autonomous Systems

A complex autonomous system (CAS) is a collection of interacting subsystems (agents) where each agent controls its local state to cooperatively optimize a common global objective. Depending on the application, these “agents” may simply be mobile robots, sensors, vehicles, service providers, or even processors. While optimization problems associated with such CASs aim to determine the fixed set of globally optimal agent states, control problems aim to determine the set of globally optimal agent controls (or equivalently, agent state trajectories). This webinar will explore a class of optimization problems known as “optimal coverage problems” and a class of control problems known as “optimal persistent monitoring problems,” arising in various crucial CASs applications such as in mobile sensor networks, surveillance, reconnaissance, patrolling, data collecting, distributed estimation, etc. Recent solutions developed for such classes of problems using cutting-edge techniques like boosting functions, control barrier functions, parametric control and event-driven receding horizon control will be presented along with their fundamentals and observed interesting experimental results.

Effective Feature Selection Techniques for Machine Learning

Feature selection is the process of selecting a subset of relevant variables from the total features available in the data set for building simpler, faster and more reliable machine

learning algorithms. There is no centralized source of knowledge for feature selection and a variety of techniques can be applied to select the most predictive features within the data set.

 In this workshop, the participants will learn multiple procedures to select features, what their advantages and disadvantages are and when and why to use them. After participating to this workshop, the participants will be able;

  • To enhance the knowledge of feature selection
  • To implement the different techniques in the most suitable scenario
  • To build simpler, faster and more reliable machine learning models

Smart Building Practices Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow

Smart building designs, demands the construction industry today and it is the concept of designing energy efficient buildings which uses technology to enable efficient and economical use of resources, while creating a safe and comfortable environment for occupants. Smart buildings may use a wide range of existing technologies and are designed or retrofitted in a way that allows for the integration of future technological developments. This workshop aims to provide knowledge on following topics.

  • Why smart building designs?
  • Design features of smart buildings.
  • Save energy by automating controls and optimizing systems in smart buildings.
  • Sustainability through smart buildings.
